Like everyone else, I wondered about the hype surrounding this product. If something sounds too good to be true, then it usually is, right?
So I finally broke down and bought some. Once I ordered it, the two weeks I had to wait to receive it were torture. I ordered it through Amazon which is where I order everything when possible. The price usually runs around $50 per bottle, give or take a little. If you sign up for the automatic delivery program you will usually get it a little cheaper.
This product is supposed to do the following:
- Effectively moisturizes the skin
- Stimulates collagen formation
- Reduces the appearance of wrinkles
- Fights age spots
The bottle I received had leaked a small amount before it got to me, which was unfortunate, but I didn’t want to wait more time to get a replacement bottle.
The solution is a beige color with a slight smell that is tolerable. It doesn’t smell great, but it’s not awful either. A small amount covers a lot of skin, so I was able to use it sparingly.
I first thought it was going to take a long time to soak completely into my skin, but it turns out that it NEVER completely soaks in. In fact, the pillow I was sleeping on started turning yellow. (The vitamin C in it turns that color.) I wasn’t overly concerned since I figured it was come out in the wash. Well, MOST of it did, but it left some slight permanent stains. After that I started covering my pillow with a towel. That doesn’t feel as good to my face while I’m sleeping, but it’s better than the stains.
When I first applied the solution it started stinging my face and making it itch. It subsided after a few minutes and was fine after that. I’m sure that’s the glycolic acid working, since it felt similar to a glycolic mask that I frequently use.
I used Nightskin every night for over a month (out of one bottle) and found that after the first week the small blackheads I had seemed to be disappearing. The ones that were left seemed to “sit” on top of my skin and were easily wiped away. That was amazing to me! I have had very oily skin since I was a teenager, so blackheads have always been a problem for me.
The next thing I noticed was that other little imperfections were starting to fade. I have these places on my face that the dermatologist said came from having oily skin. These started to gradually fade.
When summer weather hit my oily skin cranked up again and I found that my skin could not tolerate Nightskin without being way too oily and actually causing break outs, so to remedy this problem I started mixing a small amount of Retin-A with it before applying it to my face. This fixed the problem of oiliness but diminished some of the other benefits I had been seeing from the product. (The overall smoothness I had seen seemed to lessen and reversal of imperfections seemed to stop.)
So do I like this product? Yes, I do. And I will continue to use it in order evaluate the long term benefits.
By the time they have to worry about wrinkles, most people don’t have the oily skin issues I have (at least not to this extent anyway). So for the average person this product provides everything you need to moisturize, exfoliate, and repair your skin in the short term.
As for the long term effects……we’ll see.
I am giving it four stars instead of five mostly because it discolors my pillow and because I haven’t evaluated the long term effects yet.
Updated October 2012: I am no longer using this product because it’s just too much trouble to get the stains off my pillows. I find that I cannot stay on a towel while I am asleep and I couldn’t get used to feeling like my face was still wet while trying to go to sleep. I also had to completely discontinue using it when summer humidity kicked in to full swing. However, this product might be wonderful for someone with extremely dry skin.
